Recreation New Brunswick’s programs and initiatives are designed to engage recreation professionals, volunteers, students and the wider community in enhancing quality of life for the province.
NB PLAYS! is a New Brunswick-led initiative developed by Recreation New Brunswick and its partners. It supports leaders and strengthens capacity for recreation programming that fosters health and wellness in our province.
NB PLAYS! has established a framework for quality, holistic programming that promotes physical, mental, emotional, social and spiritual wellness. The initiative is aligned with New Brunswick’s Wellness Movement, featuring positive mental health, physical activity, healthy eating, learning experiences, outdoor adventures and community connections as key elements of overall well-being.
To support the movement towards healthy eating in recreation settings, the Healthy Eating in Recreation Environments (HERE) Working Group was formed in 2016. The goal of this group is to increase the provision of healthy food and beverages, while limiting unhealthy options in recreation environments across New Brunswick. The group aims to build capacity for healthy eating in recreation settings through communication, research, and resource development.
The Inclusive Recreation Activity Fund is now exclusively available for municipalities and organizations that deliver recreation services. Expenses associated with new or existing inclusive physical activity programming or infrastructure that removes barriers to active living and/or recreation opportunities are eligible for funding. For more information, please read our funding guidelines.
Municipalities or organizations that deliver recreation services can apply for funding from the Inclusive Recreation Activity Fund to help cover costs associated with inclusive physical activity programming or facility upgrades. Examples of appropriate requests include funding to reduce program fees, purchase new equipment, cover transportation costs or perform facility upgrades.

HIGH FIVE® is Canada’s quality standard for children’s recreation and sport. Before HIGH FIVE®, no standard existed and there was a clear need for an innovative approach to help organizations enhance program quality and provide positive experiences for children, which would remain with them for a lifetime.
Recreation New Brunswick is happy to be a part of the HIGH FIVE® National representation as the Provincial Authorized Provider. If you are looking to become a part of Canada’s only quality assurance program for recreation and sport programs, get in touch with us today!
HIGH FIVE® uses principles of healthy child development to provide a range of training, assessment tools and resources and ensures that leaders, coaches and instructors have the necessary knowledge to nurture a child’s mental health while creating positive experiences.
